Casa construida sólo en bambú

The French Architecture Office Karawitz Architecture has developed a passive bamboo house in Bessancourt, near Paris, France. Under passive house energy efficiency standards, the side of the house facing north has been closed in order to reduce heat loss and the one facing the south offers an open design in order to take advantage of sunlight.

Aesthetically, it is an abstract copy of a traditional house. The solid wood panels structure of the house is covered with untreated bamboo. Such coating, which becomes grey in the course of time, was inspired by traditional barns in the region Île-de-France, where this house is located.

The South-oriented large windows have shutters in order to provide the house with light and shade during the day or at night. The roof of the house is covered with solar panels that produce 2,695 kW h. per year. The shallow foundation is the only concrete element in the house, as the whole structure is made up of large solid pre-manufactured wood panels.

Works built under passive house standards are considered to be energy saving world leaders, as they save 90% of energy compared to traditional houses. Besides, they are also considered  to be comfortable, healthy and self-sustainable ones.
