Each year, 10 million tons of plastic waste are thrown into the sea. Such waste is moved by ocean currents to the North Pacific area, thus generating a huge floating island of garbage that pollutes water and kills thousands of animals that eat small pieces of plastic when feeding. In order to tackle this dramatic scenario, the architecture office WHIM has presented a project that aims to recycle part of this huge and highly polluting island of garbage in order to create a new one: The “Recycled Island.”

This project is not only intended to clean the ocean, but also to be used as a shelter for the people who have lost their homes as a result of a natural disaster.

The size of this new floating city will be very large, since the mass of plastic waste in the ocean has the size of both France and Spain combined. The project consist in the development of a new 10,000 sq m. floating habitat located between San Francisco and Hawaii. This new sustainable island will offer beaches, green spaces and buildings. It will be built with sand and plastic from the huge island of garbage. Plastic will be collected, properly recycled and transformed into floating platforms which arranged together will create the new island.

The main features of The Recycled Island are explained in detail in the official website of the project: www.recycledisland.com. It is emphasized the idea that this habitable area will become a green urban environment.

It will be a self-sustained and non-polluted habitat that will have its own resources: it will generate its own clean energy and foods as there will be large areas of land to be cultivated.

In addition, the island will responsibly manage all waste generated in it. Despite the fact that this amazing project is just an idea, WHIM is looking for partners interested in fulfilling it.
